The Dedication of Studies
by John Twist, SJ
God, our almighty Father,
to you we dedicate our studies
and the work that we do this year.
Open our minds and our hearts
so that together we may be grateful for our gifts and the gifts of others;
generous to become men and women for others;
attentive and discerning in the events of daily life;
compassionate with the needy;
loving towards others;
faith-filled in our beliefs, with hope in the future;
eloquent and truthful in our speech;
learning to find God in all things;
curious to know;
engaged with the world;
committed to change for the better.
May we use the resources of the earth prudently
and set a prophetic example by our conduct,
so that we may employ our knowledge to benefit others
and create one family of all nations
to the greater glory of God.
May Mary, the mother of your son,
and our mother too,
assist us in all that we do
and make us more like her son,
our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Prayer to be prayed by Teachers
by Adrian Porter, SJ
Lord, you have called me to teach
and you give me your son, Jesus the Teacher, as my guide.
You send me to be your face and word in school today,
to bring your message of faith, hope and love.
With my pupils may I be always patient and understanding
and never resentful or despairing.
With my colleagues may I be always generous and supportive
and never dismissive or hurtful.
With those entrusted to lead the school
may I be always considerate and constructive
and never obstructive or difficult.
With myself may I be always grateful for daily blessings
and never take things for granted.
With everyone I encounter today may I be just in my actions
and forgiving with my words.
May I praise, not criticise; encourage, not deter;
help, not hinder; accompany, not direct;
and bring light and joy to those I meet. .
May my lessons be truthful and inspiring
as they reveal the wonderful traces of your presence in creation
and in the best of human kind.
May my classroom be a place of peace and respect,
discovery and learning,
where each person is given space and encouragement to flourish,
growing to be the person you call them to be.
Give me energy, and faith and commitment,
especially when I am tired or despondent,
let down, or wondering if my efforts are worthwhile.
Give me the wisdom and strength of your Spirit,
today and each day,
that I may help the souls committed to my care
for the common good
and for your greater glory. Amen.
Daily Prayers 2014
O God, source of all love,
You are love and your love overflows to all creation. You have shown your love for us through our parents and teachers.
Make us love you more and more each day. Help us to love one another regardless of our varied background: help us love each other even when we are different in our race, religious tradition, gender, economic status and country of origin.
We ask this in your love forever and ever. (Amen)
O God, source of faith,
You are the One we believe in with all sincerity and truth. You have shown yourself in different religions. We have come to know and believe in you through the faith of our parents and teachers.
Increase our faith in you everyday. Make us desire to know you more and to live in an intimate relationship with you.
We ask this in your name forever and ever. (Amen)
O God, source of all hope,
You are the One in whom we hope with great trust. You have shown your strength and might in the world, especially when we feel down and are depressed, or when we face challenges in life.
Help us place all our trust in you in spite of difficulties and troubles in our lives. Give us strength each day to live out our lives as good persons and as hardworking students.
We ask this in hope forever and ever. (Amen)
O God, source of all goodness,
From you, all good and beauty come forth. You are a good and kind God who cares for us even when we don’t deserve it. You have shown your goodness to us through the events in our lives and the people we encounter each day, especially our parents and teachers.
Help us to become more aware of your goodness in these people and the things that happen to us. Make us be grateful to you constantly.
We thank you forever and ever. (Amen)
O God, source of all mercies,
You are full of mercy, compassion and kindness. You are patient with us and always ever ready to forgive us our wrongdoings. You have shown your mercy to us without fail.
May we be conscious of our weakness and wrongdoings. Help us to forgive one another when we wrong each other. Help us not to keep revenge in our hearts. Help us to be instruments of your peace and forgiveness to everyone.
We ask this in forgiveness. (Amen)
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding
and my entire will.
All I have and call my own,
you have given all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.
Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace.
That is enough for me.
– St Ignatius of Loyola
Prayer for Generosity
Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labour and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your will.
– St Ignatius of Loyola
The First Principle and Foundation
(by St Ignatius of Loyola, as paraphrased by David L. Fleming, S.J.)
St. Ignatius begins his Spiritual Exercises with The First Principle and Foundation. While not typically thought of as a prayer, it still contains much that is worth reflecting on.
The goal of our life is to live with God forever.
God, who loves us, gave us life.
Our own response of love allows God’s life
to flow into us without limit.
All the things in this world are gifts from God,
presented to us so that we can know God more easily
and make a return of love more readily.
As a result, we appreciate and use all these gifts of God
insofar as they help us to develop as loving persons.
But if any of these gifts become the center of our lives,
they displace God
and so hinder our growth towards our goal.
In everyday life, then, we must hold ourselves in balance
before all of these created gifts insofar as we have a choice
and are not bound by some obligation.
We should not fix our desires on health or sickness,
wealth or poverty, success or failure, a long life or a short one.
For everything has the potential of calling forth in us
a deeper response to our life in God.
Our only desire and our one choice should be this:
I want and I choose what better leads
to God’s deepening his life in me.
Prayer of St Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
Daily Prayers 2012 and 2013
A Student’s Prayer by St Thomas Aquinas
Creator of all things,
true source of light and wisdom,
origin of all being,
graciously let a ray of your light penetrate
the darkness of my understanding.
Take from me the double darkness
in which I have been born,
an obscurity of sin and ignorance.
Give me a keen understanding,
a retentive memory, and
the ability to grasp things
correctly and fundamentally.
Grant me the talent
of being exact in my explanations
and the ability to express myself
with thoroughness and charm.
Point out the beginning,
direct the progress,
and help in the completion.
I ask this through Christ our Lord.
O God, All Merciful One,
thank you for giving us another day.
Forgive us, if we did not care enough,
for our studies,
for our parents, brothers and sisters,
for our friends.
Help us to listen, to what our teachers teach us today,
to understand what we are to learn today,
to do what is good for our school,
without grumbling, but with cheerfulness,
without wasting time, but with enthusiasm.
There is no other day, like this day.
It will pass, and never be ours again.
The only thing that will last, will be the fruit we reap,
for our studies,
for our life,
for the happiness of those
we love, through Your blessing, now and forever.
O God, Almighty One, we stand in Your presence.
We pray for forgiveness of our sins, faults and failures.
Take control of us throughout this day.
Control our tongues, so that we may speak
honest and encouraging words.
Control our thoughts, so that we may think
kind and good thoughts.
Control our actions, so that in all we do,
we may be a credit to all, by
our good work,
our positive attitude, and
our best behaviour.
When evening falls, may all our thoughts and actions,
lead to peaceful hearts, and joyful living,
in Your love forever and ever.
O God, All Loving One, help us to work well today. Help us
to study effectively,
to be kind to one another,
to face our troubles cheerfully, and
to respond positively, to advice and criticism.
May we live this day,
For the honour of Your Name,
For the love of our families,
For the future of our country, and welfare of our lives.
This we ask in all sincerity, now and always.
O God, All Present One, from whom all good things come,
We offer up to You another day.
Watch over us, in all we do.
Make us today, instruments of Your peace;
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
This we ask in sincerity, now and always.
O God, All Knowing One, thank you for giving us another day.
Help us to give our best today,
in our studies,
in our games,
in our duties to our family, our school and our society.
Help us to see and serve You, in all around us;
in our parents,
in our friends, and
in our enemies.
Help us to think less of ourselves, and more of others;
to know our faults, and to correct them;
to see the good in others, and overlook their failings.
O God, bless our efforts, forgive our failures today,
and be with us now and forever.
Prayer for Success in Examinations
O God, of Divine wisdom, understanding and power,
Help us today, as we are about to sit for our examination.
Help us to overcome our nervousness,
by staying calm and clear-headed.
Enlighten our minds, so that we can
understand, and remember
the important things we have studied.
When we sit for the examination, give us the discipline to
follow instructions exactly, and the ability to
understand what the questions require,
plan our answers intelligently and complete the exam
paper on time.
Each night, help us to sleep well
so that our bodies are well rested,
and our minds refreshed,
to face the next day’s examination.
We pray that each of us will do the best that we can.
We lift ourselves, and our needs, into Your loving hands, trusting you will answer and bless our efforts.
O God, Almighty One,
from whom all good things come.
Thank you for giving us another day,
for our lives and for our talents.
Thank you for our parents
who love, care and nurture us.
Thank you for our school,
where there is love, care and strict discipline.
Thank you for our administrators and teachers
who always sacrifice much to guide,
form and teach us correct values.
Thank you for our supporting school staff,
who work hard to maintain a conducive environment for us
to study, and take part in extra-curricular activities.
Thank you for all the facilities,
which help us to develop all aspects of our life.
Thank you for our families, relatives, friends and other people,
who support us spiritually and morally, in one way or another.
And most of all, thank you God, for all our excellent achievements,
in the academic and extra-curricular fields all these years;
and especially for outstanding results,
in the public examinations, and in competitions.
Once again, O God, Almighty One,
thank you for all your blessings on us,
now and always.
